I wish I had been there
When they first saw the star
The wonder, the exhilarating fear
Their eyes bright as they followed
I wish I had been there.
I wish I had been there
In the stable at your birth
Who held you first that night?
Whose gaze first met yours?
I wish I had been there.
And, when you taught at the temple
When you turned water into wine
When you felt the touch of faith on your hem
When you cried, "Lazarus come out!"
Oh, I wish I had been there!
When Thomas touched the holes in your hands
When you took five loaves of bread
And two fish
And with them you fed five thousand people!
I wish I had been there!
When the lepers were healed
The deaf heard, the blind saw
And the lame walked!
When you healed them all with love
I wish I had been there!
When you were betrayed
Were there tears in your eyes?
When your heart ached
Did even one hold you close?
I wish I had been there.
When they lifted that cross
When tears flowed down
And prayers rose up
When you gave your life for me
I wish I had been there.
And, on that bright morning
When they found the tomb empty
The flash of anger at the theft
The burst of joy when they realized...
The ringing sound of, "He Is Risen!"
I wish I had been there!
Oh, Sweet Jesus, I wish I had been there!
This is a poem never shared before that will be in my second book,
Heart Strings and Angel Wings, which is expected to be
on the shelves early January 2007
