"Sh-h-h - Somebody's
coming."
"No, they're all in
bed."
"I hope you're
right," she whispered,
"Otherwise we'll both
be dead."
I took her hand and led
her,
My little sis and me,
We crept down the darkened
hallway,
It was really hard to see.
"Watch that third
step, Sarah."
We started down the
stairs.
Oh, oh, I heard it creak,
I warned her it was there.
"Gee, I'm sorry,
Sammy,"
We stopped and did not
breathe.
"Sh-h-h, be quiet,
Sarah."
Then we moved on again,
relieved.
Soon we reached the bottom
step,
Now - the tricky
part.
We had to move through two
more rooms,
I hoped Ralph wouldn't
bark.
But he just rubbed against
my leg,
"Good boy - good
dog, Ralph."
Sarah started giggling,
"Sh-h-h! Now's
not the time to laugh.
The three of us then
tiptoed on,
Our goal was still in mind.
I led our trio fearlessly,
Ralph and Sarah close
behind.
Success at last! The
Pantry!
We sneaked in through the
door.
"Oh dear," said
Sarah softly,
"The cupboard's too
high from the floor."
Well, she was right, I
must admit,
I had not thought of that.
"Hold on, Sarah, let
me think,
I know - you get up on top
my back."
I knelt down, and she
climbed up,
She reached for the
cupboard shelf.
The cookie jar was in her
grasp,
I was so happy with
myself.
Suddenly we were bathed in
light,
There stood our dad
aghast!
A flashlight pointing from
his hand,
As he caught us in the
act!
"You crazy kids -
what's going on?"
Then Ralph began to
bark.
Sarah fell off my aching
back,
I no longer felt so smart.
Just then, guess who else
showed up?
Yep, that's right - here's
mom.
"Sarah! Sam!
Dad! Ralph!
What in heaven's going
on?"
Well, to make a long tale
short,
There was some reprimand,.
I was most to blame, of
course,
Since I'd led Sarah by the
hand.
But the episode did end
quite well,
For in the middle of the
night.
We four had milk and
cookies,
In the dark - just dad's
flashlight
